Efficiency is one of the most important criteria in any commercial vehicle.

But how many of us know that the tyres on which the least attention is paid, play a significant role in achieving this efficiency?

When the tyres are poorly inflated, it causes a big impact on the performance including the carrying capacity, safety and longevity.

It also results in an increase in cost, travel time, wastage of fuel and wear-tear of the tyre.

Most of us pay attention to tyres when already there is a puncture or less air in them.

We don’t even remember to check the air pressure regularly. Solving this entire problem of late realizing less pressure in tyres and manual checking,

here comes a technologically upgraded solution, Tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

What is a Tyre pressure monitoring system?

TPMS is an electronic system designed to monitor the air pressure (and optionally, temperature) of the tyres.

It provides real-time information which is conveyed to a driver either through a graphic display or simple low-pressure light on the dashboard or on an app on the smartphone.

The whole purpose of TPMS is to warn you about the under-inflation of one or more than one tyre of your vehicle.

The under-inflated tyres cause unsafe driving conditions, possibly resulting in accidents.

However, realizing the importance of TPMS, a number of manufacturers are working on this technology and introducing sensors to enhance safety.

How does the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System work?

As the name suggests, indirect TPMS does not rely on physical pressure sensors.

The pressure is measured by monitoring the rotational speed of the wheel along with other signals outside of the tyres.

Direct TPMS

This is the surest and preferred way of TPMS. Here, tyres are fitted with individual sensors so that the data is transmitted to the dashboard,

just like a radio signal.

The driver comes to know about the pressure and temperature of the tyres and can take action.

In case you doubt the life of these sensors, let us tell you that they work with a battery that needs to be replaced in order to get the right information at the right time.

What are the benefits of tyre pressure monitoring system?

Extend the life of tyres: The main reason for tyre failure is under-inflated tyres. When the tyres are not inflated up to the optimum level,

it can create mechanical or thermal overload which ultimately results in sidewall damage, tyre disintegration, and breakdowns.

A tyre pressure sensor can save you from all such incidents by sending you real-time data.

Fuel efficiency: Incorrect inflation in the tyres requires a huge amount of fuel for running.

When the tyre pressure is accurate, the vehicle consumes less fuel and gives better mileage.

Cost efficiency: A tyre pressure monitoring system saves your money in many ways.

It decreases your downtime hours, and saves the money spent on repairing and refilling fuel.

Better road safety: Under-inflated tyres cause unpredictable drive patterns. This can even lead to sudden injuries and accidents.

To save you from all this, TPMS gives the information at the right time so that you can visit the nearby tyre repair shop.

Good for the environment: When the tyres are not properly inflated they release more carbon monoxide than usual.

A TPMS installed in your vehicle makes you environmentally more responsible.
